Why the Name Change? From PCOS to PMOS


For decades, the term Polycystic Ovary Syndrome caused massive confusion. The old name implied that the condition was strictly an ovarian issue and that you must have cysts on your ovaries to have it. In reality, many women with this condition never develop ovarian cysts at all!

The updated name—Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)—places the focus where it belongs: on metabolic and systemic hormone health.

1. Can I still get pregnant if I have PMOS?

Yes, absolutely. While PMOS is one of the most common causes of ovulatory delays, having PMOS does not mean you are infertile. With simple lifestyle adjustments, ovulation tracking, or gentle medication support from your provider to encourage predictable ovulation, many women with PMOS conceive and carry healthy, full-term pregnancies.

2. How is PMOS actually diagnosed?

Providers generally look for at least two out of three key criteria:

  • Irregular or absent menstrual cycles (indicating irregular ovulation).

  • Clinical or lab signs of elevated androgens (like persistent acne, excess body hair, or elevated testosterone on bloodwork).

  • Metabolic markers or ovarian features (such as insulin resistance on lab tests or a "string of pearls" appearance of follicles on a pelvic ultrasound).
